A pool level that seems lower every morning is easy to dismiss during a hot spell in Spain. But topping it up repeatedly can hide a costly problem. Knowing how to test pool leak loss gives you a clear starting point: is the water disappearing through normal evaporation, or is it escaping from the pool, its fittings or the pipework beneath the ground?

A simple test can provide useful evidence without dismantling anything. It cannot identify every leak, but it will help you decide whether to monitor the situation or call in a specialist before water loss causes damage, higher bills or problems with surrounding paving.

First, understand normal pool water loss

All pools lose water naturally. Heat, direct sunshine, wind and low humidity increase evaporation, while splashing, backwashing and vacuuming to waste can lower the level quickly. In Costa Blanca properties, particularly during long warm and breezy periods, evaporation can be noticeable.

As a broad guide, a pool may lose a few millimetres of water a day in summer. There is no single figure that applies to every pool, because surface area, exposure, water temperature and use all matter. What should concern you is a sudden change, an ongoing need to add significant water, or a level that falls at a similar rate even when the pool is not being used.

Before testing, make sure the lower water level is not explained by a recent filter clean, backwash cycle, overflowing during heavy rain, enthusiastic family use or a fault with an automatic top-up system.

How to test pool leak loss with a bucket test

The bucket test compares evaporation from a container of water with water loss from the pool. It is straightforward, low-cost and often the best first check for homeowners.

Choose a calm 24-hour period if possible. Avoid testing immediately before rain, during unusually high winds, or when the pool will be used. You will need a plastic bucket, a marker pen or waterproof tape, and a ruler for more accurate measurements.

Set up the test carefully

  1. Fill the pool to its usual operating level. If it is already low, record that level rather than topping it up repeatedly during the test.
  1. Half-fill a bucket with pool water. Place it on a pool step so that the water in the bucket sits at roughly the same height as the pool water. Do not leave it on hot paving, where it may heat up differently and produce a misleading result.
  1. Mark the water level inside the bucket. Then mark the pool water level on the tile, skimmer faceplate or with a small piece of tape above the waterline. Do not mark a surface that could move.
  1. Turn the circulation system off and leave the pool undisturbed for 24 hours. Keep children, pets and inflatables out of the water during this period.
  1. After 24 hours, compare the drop in the bucket with the drop in the pool. Measure both if you can, rather than relying only on a visual comparison.

If the pool and bucket levels have fallen by approximately the same amount, evaporation is the likely explanation. If the pool has dropped noticeably more than the bucket, a leak is likely.

Repeat the test with the pump running

A second test can help narrow down where the problem may be. Refill the pool to the same reference mark, reset the bucket marks, then run the filtration system normally for another 24 hours.

If water loss is greater while the pump is running, the issue may be in the pressurised side of the system. This can include pipework from the pump to the returns, the filter, heater connections, valves or a fitting that only leaks under pressure.

If the pool loses water at much the same rate with the pump on and off, the leak may be in the pool shell, skimmer, lights, drains, suction lines or pipework that leaks regardless of whether the system is operating. These results are clues, not a final diagnosis. Underground pool pipes can be complex, particularly where previous repairs or alterations have been made.

What the water level can tell you

The point at which the pool level stops falling can sometimes be useful. If it settles at the bottom of the skimmer opening, inspect the skimmer body, faceplate, screws and seal carefully. If it stops around a return inlet or light fitting, that fitting may need professional investigation.

Do not assume the leak is exactly at the final waterline, however. A leak can slow as pressure reduces, and a crack or failed seal may only be exposed at certain levels. Letting the pool drain too far is not a sensible test. An empty or near-empty pool can suffer structural damage, and high groundwater can create additional risks for some pool types.

Look around the equipment area as well. Damp patches beneath the pump, filter or valves, white mineral deposits, corrosion, air bubbles entering the pump basket, poor circulation and a filter pressure that behaves unusually can all point to a plumbing issue. Wet ground, soft areas near the pool, loose coping stones or persistent damp in a nearby wall should also be taken seriously.

Why dye testing has limits

Pool dye tests are often suggested online. A small amount of dye is released close to a suspected crack, fitting or seam while the water is completely still. If a leak is present nearby, the dye may be drawn towards it.

This can work for a visible, accessible suspect area, such as a damaged seal around a pool light. It is far less reliable for hidden pipework, fine cracks, leaks behind tiles or leaks where water movement disperses the dye. A negative dye test does not prove there is no leak.

Avoid adding coloured products to the pool simply to investigate a vague suspicion. They can stain some finishes or complicate water treatment. Where there is evidence of genuine water loss, controlled dye tracing is more useful when carried out as part of a wider diagnostic process.

When to stop testing and call a specialist

A bucket test is valuable because it prevents guesswork, but it is not designed to locate a hidden leak precisely. Repeatedly filling the pool while waiting for the problem to become obvious usually wastes water and may allow the fault to worsen.

Professional leak detection is the sensible next step if the test indicates loss beyond evaporation, the pool is losing more water with the pump running, the level is falling quickly, or you can see dampness around the pool or equipment. It is also worth arranging an inspection if you have had unexplained water bills, cracking paving or a pool that needs frequent chemical correction because fresh water is constantly being added.

A specialist can isolate sections of the system and use methods such as pressure testing, acoustic detection, gas tracing and targeted dye testing. The aim is to identify the source accurately before repairs begin, avoiding unnecessary excavation or the costly mistake of replacing parts that were not at fault.
